I sent this to a friend who works for Leader Reid:

Do you really think the stimulus was what it could have been? I thought it was an important missed opportunity. To be successful and find the American center Obama will need to do battle with Pelosi and Reid, both left of center. He was never, will never be better positioned for that battle then right out of the gate, with his approval sky high, especially compared to the low marks for Pelosi, Reid, and the Congress. Obama needed to weigh in with full force during the conference negotiations, and insist that pork and other unnecessary spending be excised, and amendments denied Republicans by Pelosi would get their up-or-down vote in the conference bill. A campaign promise was to do that line by line with the budget once over this economic crisis. The stimulus bill was the perfect opportunity to show the Congress and the American people that that was not just campaign rhetoric, but a statement of policy. It would have been brackish water for Pelosi and Reid, but necessary, sometime..
